Kit home buyers fear they will never see their homes?

SEVERAL customers have come forward with complaints that they have not received kit homes bought from Steelsmart Homes, a company linked with troubled building company Coral Coast Homes.

SSM Products Pty Ltd, which trades as Steelsmart Homes, was being wound up yesterday after the builders licence for Coral Coast Homes director John Biles was cancelled on Monday.

Steelsmart Homes customers now face an anxious wait to hear if they would receive their kits.

Rosedale couple Peter Thompson and Claudia Richardson say they are living in a shack with no running water, next to their unfinished home, nearly two years after signing a contract with Coral Coast Homes.

“We still don't have a roof, which had been promised to us since March 13,” Mr Thompson said.

He said he paid in advance for the kit itself, and for the building to be completed to lock-up stage, after their previous home was destroyed in a fire.

“We were underinsured, so we've put every last bit into building this place,” Mr Thompson said.

He said volunteers had helped piece together parts of the home after a lengthy wait for the company's builders to get to work.

“Steve Sansom and his family came up, and without them, we wouldn't even have the plumbing,” Mr Thompson said.

“The kids say, 'we're never going to live in that house, it will never be finished'.”

Pensioner Shane McMullen said he has been left paying a mortgage on the frame of a house, after the rest of the kit was not delivered by Steelsmart Homes.

The kit home was meant to be delivered to his land in Apple Tree Creek by the second week in January.

But to date, only the frame has been received, and the single father is living with his teenage daughter in rented accommodation.

“My insurance company says I have no claim because I haven't received the kit, and the BSA say they do not cover kit homes - what do I do?” Mr McMullen said.

Representatives from SV Partners, who are receivers for Bundaberg Master Homes, were reportedly at the joint office of Coral Coast Homes and Steelsmart Homes yesterday.

But Building Services Authority general manager Ian Jennings denied the company had gone into administration.

“The Building Services Authority understands that no action has been taken to appoint administrators or liquidators to Coral Coast Homes Pty Ltd,” Mr Jennings said.

The Office of Fair Trading has urged customers who have concerns about Steelsmart Homes to telephone them on 13 13 04.

Steelsmart Homes could not be reached for comment yesterday.

TROUBLED building company Coral Coast Homes has reportedly left customers of associated company Steelsmart Homes out of pocket.

Member for Burnett Rob Messenger said he had been contacted by a family who said they had paid for a kit home which was never delivered.

Mr Messenger is concerned that there may be other people in similar circumstances and is calling on anyone experiencing similar contractual difficulties to contact his office as soon as possible and he will put through a formal request to the minister to investigate.

QBSA suspends Bundaberg builder's licence!

The Queensland Building Services Authority (QBSA) says it had little choice but to suspend the licence of Bundaberg builder Coral Coast Homes after receiving scores of complaints.

The BSA says it has been investigating the company's activities for months and is concerned about its financial position and ability to service its debts.

The authority says it tried to help the business before suspending the licence, but had no option after ongoing complaints from consumers and non-payment to subcontractors and building suppliers.

BSA general manager Ian Jennings says it decided to act yesterday when the company closed its doors.

"Over the last few months we have been investigating Coral Coast Homes there have been a number of conditions that have been put on their license," he said.

"I have had conversations with the director of the company talking through some of the issues but at the moment I am concerned that we are unable to contact the director... we felt it necessary to cancel their license immediately."

Mr Jennings says the authority had to protect consumers, subcontractors and suppliers.

"Any subcontractors or suppliers out there which have concerns about this are welcome to contact the BSA on 1300 272 272," he said.

"We, at the moment, are about to write to all consumers and we will assess their entitlement under the home warranty consumer scheme."

" Tradies take their IOUs to doorstep "

CLOSE to $100,000 of unpaid bills stood on the front doorstep of Coral Coast Homes yesterday in the form of an angry group of unpaid tradies - but the “closed” sign remained.

The tradies say they have been unable to reach director John Biles since he shut his doors on Friday.

Yesterday, it seemed no one could get hold of him - including the Building Services Authority.

Now the watchdog has suspended the company's building licence, telling Coral Coast Homes to pay its debts before it can get it back.

It is arranging for a “turnaround expert” to analyse the business, which has suffered a steep decline in its fortunes.

In 2002/03, it did 32 jobs totalling $6.45 million, but in 2008/09 it did 13, bringing in $1.6 million.

Today, it has 12 contracts.

PLASTERER John Ivich knows that he has seen payment of his bills by Coral Coast Homes take longer and longer periods, and today says he is owed $5500.

But the problem does not stop with him - Mr Ivich has a crew of six dependent on his income.

“I've already paid them and paid for my materials, but he (John Biles) hasn't paid me,” he said.

He is one of almost a dozen tradies who say they are owed money by Coral Coast Homes - collectively around $100,000 in total.

Painter Peter Meiers was blunt yesterday.

“I just want my money,” he said, adding that he alone was owed more than $9000.

Ian Jennings, general manager of the Building Services Authority (BSA) - which is overseen by Minister for Public Works Robert Schwarten - said it had been investigating the company for some months regarding its financial position.

He said Coral Coast's licence had been suspended “to prevent serious financial and other harm to subcontractors, suppliers and consumers”.

The BSA had received information from the company's accountant stating it met the BSA's financial requirement for licensing.

“Despite this assurance from the company's accountant, the BSA continued to receive information that the company was not paying its debts,” he said.

Now the BSA was arranging for a “turnaround expert” to go in analyse the business. The expert would also be able to “assist with any restructure”.

On May 19, the BSA imposed conditions on the company's licence which effectively imposed a watching brief.

When Mr Biles went to ground, however, the authority had to step up its measures.

“BSA had no option other than to suspend the company's licence today due to ongoing complaints of non-payment, the fact that the company had closed its doors, and that the company's director and other representatives could not be contacted by BSA,” he said.

“The BSA will lift this suspension if the company can demonstrate that it can and will pay its debts.”

The authority understood a report had been prepared for the company on its situation, but the BSA had not been provided with a copy.

Mr Biles did not return the NewsMail's phone calls yesterday. "

The phones were running hot this morning, as news media were looking for information, as to the new CCH structure, which was rumored to include john Biles walking away from the company? Details are yet to be confirmed, but if john thinks this is going to let him off the hook he is going to be sadly disappointed?

BSA Re-Structuring Coral Coast Homes?

Talk about Administration Re-structure, sounds like the BSA have given out there own set of Re-Structuring that Coral Coast Homes have to play too now, not sure if I can legally put it here, but if you go to the BSA site Here and type in Coral Coast Homes in the search box, you will see that they have had conditions put on there Building License, if you download the PDF of company details for it, you can read what those conditions are? Interesting?
Word on the street also…that there’s been a bit of home Re-Structuring going on for Big John too, having been kicked out? I almost feel sorry for the guy? With all this Re-Structuring going on? Where will it end?

Administration Re-Structure?

Need Administration Re-Structure? Could of told them that long time ago, if you happened to be a few people looking for money ( as if you would get it) Today, at the office, this notice is what you would have seen on the front Door, with no one to be found? Word is Big and little John are not even in town? And staffs don’t know what’s happening. Word on the street Also, is that Monday Coral Coast Homes have to present there books to the BSA, looks like the BSA wants to look before the Courts do on the 11th June, Interesting Times?, Unfortunately this is not a good sign for all of us, in getting paid?
